Historical, 100 years Miss Amsterdam
In 1926 the first Miss Amsterdam was crowned. We will dive into the history of this pageant
Miss Amsterdam ’87: Crowns, Chaos & Pop-Star Drama
It’s Thursday night, April 9. Leidseplein is overflowing. Inside club De Bios, twelve young women wait backstage for the Miss Amsterdam pageant, nerves tight, smiles fixed, dreams on the line. This crown matters: it’s the second most important pageant after Miss Holland and could provide a ticket to an international pageant in Europe.
Then the circus arrives.
British pop duo Mel & Kim are meant to be the glamorous finale. Instead, they bring delay, confusion, and full-scale backstage warfare. They arrive late, soaked, exhausted, and furious. Their dressing room is flooded. Ice blocks melt. Clothes are ruined. Managers argue. Journalists swarm. Bodyguards shove. Outside, nearly a thousand fans shiver and wait.
At one point, an English manager snaps: “This is blackmail. I’m going to bed.”
Meanwhile, in another dressing room, reality couldn’t be more different.
Angélique Gouw (20) from Delft is glowing. Surrounded by proud parents and friends, she accepts congratulations with grace. Fellow contestants hug her warmly, proving that real sportsmanship still exists backstage. No tantrums. No drama. Just a winner.
Loaded down with flowers, gifts, a massive silver trophy, and a ticket to Rio de Janeiro, Miss Amsterdam ’87 makes her triumphant way through the crowd toward the exit — calm, smiling, unstoppable.
The irony is perfect.
One room is chaos.
The other is class.
