Many beauty queens in the 80’s and the 90’s became television show assistants. In this magazine there are 5 girls who all became household names as the assistant of the host of a (game) show. 3 of these where a beauty queen and represented the Netherlands sometimes at an international beauty pageant.

In our series with television assistants who also were beauty queens we can not do without Sophia de Boer. In 1986 she became 1st runner-up at the Miss Holland pageant, won by Janny Tervelde. Sophia would represent the Netherlands at the first Miss Wonderland pageant, where she placed as a semi-finalist. In 2015 she won the Mrs Universe Netherlands crown and she represented our country at the Mrs Universe pageant where she placed again as a semi-finalist.

Telling Sophia that she can’t do something, has the same effect as a holding red cloth in front of a bull. With everything in her power the vamp from Ermelo with proof the opposite.
This is how her “show” career started. She had her mind set on the Mis Holland pageant. Her family was against it. So she became second in 1986 and a half year later she replaced Miss Holland. As a replacement she represented the Netherlands in Japan.
At the AVRO, they also fell for her charm, she became an tv assistant for Fred Oster at “Prijs je Rijk”. Then the beauty queen participated two times in “Sterrenjacht”, was naughty in “Spijkerhoek” and also in a fight movie ” China White” from which she was unfortunately almost completely removed. With some help from fake curls and Rob Out, she became an announcer in 1989 at Veronica.  “According to insiders it was the boss himself who saw my video and exclaimed that I was perfect for the profession. I also did this until 1990.”

Last winter Sophia assisted Carl Huybrechts 14 times in ” The Hollywood Connection”. “I entered the audition on spec and got the job. While the producers of the program were looking for an exotic brunette as the opposite of Carl. Now I know what I want and I will fight for it. Being an assistant is good for my “brand” awareness. In the end I hope to succeed as an actress or be a host fo my own television show. I want to become famous.”
