The Miss International beauty pageant started in 1960, when the Miss Universe Organization left Long Beach, California, after almost 10 years as host city, to continue their pageant in Miami Beach. The people of Long Beach were very disappointed about that and so they started a new international beauty pageant: The International Beauty Congress, nowadays known as Miss International.
Beauty pageants were quite popular in the Netherlands at the start of the 90’s. Miss Nederland and Miss Universe Netherlands were both popular television programs. This was of course all because of Angela Visser, who had won the Miss Universe pageant in 1989.
Although the Miss World and the Miss Universe pageant were popular, the Miss International pageant could not benefit from this. The Miss International pageant was the most important pageant owned by the Miss Holland organization who had lost bot the Miss World and the Miss Universe franchise to other organizations.
The girls who represented the Netherlands in the Miss International pageant in 1990, 1991, 1992 and 1993 can therefore be called Miss Holland.
In 1994 the franchise of Miss International was with the Miss Universe Netherlands organization who was the new owner of the Miss Holland franchise and all the titles belonging to the former Miss Holland organization.
In the second part of “Miss International, the dutch girls” we will introduce those who represented the Netherlands in the early 90’s.
1990
Esther den Otter
In 1990 the Netherlands was represented by Esther den Otter at the Miss International pageant. She was 4th runner-up at the Miss Holland 1989 pageant and was asked by the Miss Holland Organization to go to Japan. Because there was no Miss Holland pageant at that time we can probably say that Esther was Miss Holland 1990. As far as way know this is the only international pageant Esther did go to.
1991
Marjanne Kraaijeveld
Like Esther den Otter in 1990, Marjanne was a participant at the Miss Holland 1989 pageant. Marjanne did not place as a finalist but she was asked by the Miss Holland organization to represent the Netherlands at the Miss International 1991 pageant in Japan. She told us that she had a great time in Japan. The Miss Holland and the Miss International pageant are the only two pageants she ever participated in.
1992
Linda Grandia
Linda Grandia represented the Netherlands at the Miss International 1993 pageant. One year later, in 1994, she entered the Miss Universe Netherlands pageant where she represented the province of Utrecht.
She is still busy in the world of beauty pageants. In 2009 she became Mrs Globe Netherlands and became a semi-finalist at the Mrs Globe international pageant and in 2010 she became Mrs Netherlands and represented the Netherlands at the Mrs World pageant. In 201o she also organized the first ever held Mrs Globe Netherlands where Yolanda Koelhof was the crowned Mrs Globe Netherlands. Nowadays she is really busy organizing the international beauty pageant Miss Multiverse. This year already held for the 4th time.
1993
Shirley Bogaard
The only thing we know about Shirley Bogaard is that she represented the Netherlands at the Miss International 1993 pageant in Japan.
1994
Sabine te Vrede
The Miss Universe Netherlands organization was the new franchise holder of the Miss International pageant and therefore the first runner-up of the Miss Universe Netherlands 1994 pageant, Sabine te Vrede, had the honor to represent the Netherlands at that pageant. Sabine is the only girl from the Netherlands who became a semi-finalist at the pageant in the 90’s. After the Miss International pageant she could be seen on tv as an actress and also in commercials.
