The Miss International beauty pageant started in 1960, when the Miss Universe Organization left Long Beach, California, after almost 10 years as host city, to continue their pageant in Miami Beach. The people of Long Beach were very disappointed about that and so they started a new international beauty pageant: The International Beauty Congress, nowadays known as Miss International.
In the 80’s there were several incidents according the Miss Holland pageant. Beauty pageants were therefore not really popular in the Netherlands although the dutch girls did a good job at the international pageants. Of course the popularity increased when Angela Visser became Miss Universe in 1989.
There are only two more parts, the beginning of the 60’s and the Miss International pageant and the second part of the 60’s. The second part of the 60’s were not very successful at the Miss International pageant. Let’s see how we did…
1965
Elaine Bollen
Elaine Bollen was one of the favorites to win the Miss Holland pageant in 1965. the pageant was held twice, first live on television at the “Rudi Carrell-show”, but as there was no official jury the pageant had to be held later that same day in a night club, with the same result as seen on tv by the way. Elaine became first runner-up to Anja Schuit who would be the first dutch girl to be a finalist at the Miss Universe pageant. The first runner-up would represent the Netherlands at the Miss International 1965 pageant. The pageant had been very successful for the Netherlands so far with a winner and a 3rd runner-up.
Elaine did a great job becoming a semi-finalist at the Miss International 1965 pageant.
1967
Sandrina van Senus
The Miss International organization wanted to stop with Miss International pageant therefore there was no pageant in 1966. But they decided to continue in 1967.
Sandrina was first runner-up at the Miss Hollland 1966 pageant. The Miss Holland 1966 pageant was not the only pageant she had done at that time. She had done several national pageants in the Netherlands like Miss Zandvoort 1965 where she was first runner-up. At the Miss International pageant she did not place as semi-finalist.
1968
Cecile van der Lelie
Cecile van der Lelie was 3rd runner-up at the Miss Holland 1968 pageant and was asked to represent the Netherlands at the Miss International 1968 beauty pageant. The Miss Holland 1968 pageant was organized by the largest newspaper in the Netherlands: “De Telegraaf” like in 1967.
1969
Maria Lingen
When Welmoed Hollenberg won the Miss Holland 1969 pageant, in all the newspapers it was mentioned that she would represent the Netherlands at the Miss International pageant in Japan. But she did go the Miss Universe 1969 pageant and it was Maria Lingen, who was 3rd runner-up at the Miss Holland 1969 pageant, who represented the Netherlands at the Miss International 1969 pageant. She did not place at the pageant.
