The Miss International beauty pageant started in 1960, when the Miss Universe Organization left Long Beach, California, after almost 10 years as host city, to continue their pageant in Miami Beach. The people of Long Beach were very disappointed about that and so they started a new international beauty pageant: The International Beauty Congress, nowadays known as Miss International.
In the 80’s there were several incidents according the Miss Holland pageant. Beauty pageants were therefore not really popular in the Netherlands although the dutch girls did a good job at the international pageants. Of course the popularity increased when Angela Visser became Miss Universe in 1989.
The 70’s were very uneasy with various scandals at national and at international beauty pageants.
But the Miss International pageant did not have big issues during the 70’s. We will have a look at the second part of this era.
1975
Nanny Nielen
1975 was the start of a real beauty queen career for nanny Nielen. It was her first Miss Holland pageant and she became 3rd runner-up. The Miss International 1975 pageant was also her first international pageant where she would represent the Netherlands. She did a very good job as she is the only woman to become a semi-finalist at the Miss International pageant in the 70’s.
Nanny would represent the Netherlands at the big 3 pageants at that time: Miss International 1975, Miss Universe 1976 and Miss World 1979. In 1976 she would take over the Miss Holland crown as the winner of that pageant gave up the crown.
Today she is still busy in the world of beauty pageants.
1976
Cora Kitz
Cora Kitz was 1st runner-up at the Miss Holland 1975 pageant. She entered the pageant because a dear one had died. She did not want to forget but she wanted to have her mind set on something else. After Miss Holland 1975, Lynda Snippe was dethroned, Cora took over the crown. She would represent the Netherlands at the Miss International 1976 pageant where she was unplaced.
1977
Willy Muis
Not much is known about Willy Muis. She was 1st runner-up at the Miss Holland 1977 pageant and represented the Netherlands at the Miss International 1977 pageant where she was unplaced.
1978
Karin Gustafsson
Miss Holland 1978 Karin Gustafsson represented the Netherlands at two international pageants. She went first to the Miss Universe 1978 pageant where she was really popular among the press and the photographers. The judges placed her as a semi-finalist. At the Miss International 1978 pageant she did not place.
1979
Mary Kruyssen
Mary was 3rd runner-up at the Miss Holland 1979 pageant and would represent the Netherlands at the Miss International 1979 pageant in Japan. She didn’t place at the pageant. In the 90’s she played in some dutch television series as “12 Steden 13 ongelukken” and “Toen was geluk heel gewoon”.
